Identification:
A medium-sized kingfisher with a vivid turquoise-blue back, wings, and tail, contrasting with clean white underparts. It has a broad, heavy black bill and a distinctive dark eye-stripe running across the face. The head and neck may show greenish-blue tones, and the overall coloration appears bright and striking against the mangrove environment.

Habitat:
Coastal mangrove forests, specifically dense stands of grey mangroves. In the UAE, it is restricted to the mangroves of Khor Kalba, where it depends on tidal channels and sheltered coastal habitats.

Status in the UAE:
Endemic subspecies with a highly restricted range, found only in Khor Kalba. Considered rare and of high conservation importance due to its limited distribution and specialized habitat requirements.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on small fish, crabs, and other crustaceans, occasionally taking insects and small aquatic organisms.

Behavior:
Highly territorial and usually observed alone or in pairs. Often perches quietly on mangrove branches overlooking water before diving to catch prey. Strongly tied to mangrove ecosystems and rarely seen outside this habitat.
