Identification:
A large and unmistakable waterbird with entirely black plumage, contrasted by bright white flight feathers visible in flight. It has a long, gracefully curved neck and a vivid red bill with a pale tip. The eyes are reddish, and the legs and feet are dark. Its elegant posture and slow, powerful wingbeats make it easily recognizable.

Habitat:
Freshwater lakes, rivers, wetlands, lagoons, and occasionally coastal areas. Often found in calm waters with abundant aquatic vegetation. Also commonly seen in ornamental lakes and urban parks where introduced.

Status in the UAE:
Introduced species. Mostly found in ornamental settings such as parks, private collections, and managed water bodies rather than in the wild.

Diet:
Herbivorous — feeds mainly on aquatic plants, algae, and grasses, often grazing in shallow water or along shorelines.

Behavior:
Generally calm and social, often seen in pairs or small groups. Forms strong monogamous bonds and both parents participate in nest building and caring for the young. Capable of long-distance movements when water conditions change.
