Identification:
A small, elegant raptor with predominantly white plumage contrasted by bold black patches on the shoulders and wings. The upperparts are pale grey, and the eyes are striking red. It has long wings and a relatively short, square tail. In flight, it is easily recognized by its ability to hover in place, often facing into the wind, resembling a kestrel.

Habitat:
Open landscapes including agricultural lands, grasslands, wetlands, and semi-arid plains. Often associated with farmland and areas rich in small prey.

Status in Lebanon:
Rare and irregular visitor. Occasionally recorded in open lowland areas, particularly during periods of dispersal or movement, but not considered a regular breeder.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on small mammals such as rodents, as well as small birds, reptiles, and large insects.

Behavior:
Often seen hovering above open ground while scanning for prey. Hunts by dropping suddenly onto its target. Usually observed alone or in pairs. Known for its graceful flight and precise hunting technique.
