Identification:
A medium-sized songbird with strong sexual dimorphism. Males are striking deep blue overall, with darker wings and tail, giving a sleek and uniform appearance. Females and juveniles are brownish-grey with mottled and scaled patterns, providing excellent camouflage against rocky backgrounds. It has an upright posture, strong legs, and a relatively long tail. Often seen perched prominently on rocks or buildings.

Habitat:
Rocky habitats including cliffs, mountains, coastal areas, and gorges. Also adapts well to urban environments with stone structures, ruins, and buildings.

Status in the UAE:
Uncommon passage migrant and winter visitor. More frequently recorded in mountainous and rocky areas, especially during migration and winter.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds mainly on insects, small vertebrates, and berries. Forages on the ground or makes short flights to capture prey.

Behavior:
Usually solitary and territorial. Often perches on elevated exposed points, scanning for prey. Known for its melodious and flute-like song, especially during the breeding season. Makes short sallies to catch insects and frequently returns to the same perch.

Least Concern (IUCN Red List)
