Identification:
A robust, medium-sized game bird with a buff-grey body and distinctive black-and-white facial pattern. It has a bold black band running from the bill through the eye and down around the throat, forming a collar. The flanks show striking black bars on a pale background, and the bill and legs are reddish. Its compact body and strong legs are adapted for running on rocky terrain.

Habitat:
Rocky hillsides, mountains, wadis, and dry open landscapes with sparse vegetation. Prefers rugged terrain and slopes.

Status in the UAE:
Resident and locally present. Found mainly in mountainous regions such as the Hajar Mountains.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on seeds, grasses, shoots, and insects, especially during breeding season.

Behavior:
Ground-dwelling and highly adapted to running rather than flying. Often seen in small groups (coveys), moving quickly across rocky slopes. Takes flight only when necessary. Known for its loud, repetitive calls echoing through mountain valleys.
