Identification:
A small, compact bird with brilliant blue upperparts and rich orange underparts. The head is large relative to the body, with a long, straight, pointed bill. It has short legs and a short tail. In flight, it appears as a fast-moving flash of blue over water. Males typically have an all-black bill, while females show an orange-red base on the lower mandible.

Habitat:
Freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds, as well as coastal areas with suitable perches and clear water.

Status in the UAE:
Uncommon winter visitor and passage migrant. Recorded in wetlands, mangroves, and freshwater bodies.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on small fish, as well as aquatic insects, crustaceans, and occasionally tadpoles.

Behavior:
Perches quietly above water before diving rapidly to catch prey. Returns to perch to beat and swallow prey whole. Territorial and usually solitary. Known for its high-pitched call and rapid, direct flight just above water level.
