Identification:
A medium-sized rail with dark slate-grey to blackish plumage and distinctive white streaks along the flanks. The bill is bright red with a yellow tip and extends into a frontal shield above the forehead. Legs are greenish-yellow with long toes adapted for walking on floating vegetation. Juveniles are browner and duller than adults.

Habitat:
Wetlands, ponds, marshes, lakes, canals, mangroves, and slow-moving freshwater habitats with dense vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident and breeder in wetlands, parks, and freshwater habitats.

Status in Lebanon:
Common resident and breeder in suitable wetlands and freshwater areas.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on aquatic plants, seeds, insects, snails, worms, and small aquatic animals.

Behavior:
Usually seen swimming slowly near vegetation or walking across floating plants with its long toes. Frequently flicks its short tail upward, revealing white undertail markings. Territorial during breeding season and often vocal with sharp calls. Capable of short flights with dangling legs.
