Identification:
A small, elegant passerine with a distinctive orange-red tail that is frequently flicked. The male in breeding plumage shows a slate-grey head, black face and throat, white forehead, and rich orange underparts. The female is more subdued, brownish overall with a paler underside, but still shows the characteristic reddish tail. The contrast and tail color make it easy to recognize.

Habitat:
Open woodlands, orchards, gardens, parks, and forest edges. During migration, also found in a wide range of open habitats.

Status in the UAE:
Passage migrant. Fairly common during migration seasons.

Status in Lebanon:
Common passage migrant and local breeder in suitable habitats.

Diet:
Insectivorous — feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen perched upright on exposed branches or low perches. Frequently flicks its tail. Hunts by short flights to catch insects in the air or from the ground. Active and agile. Males are vocal during breeding season.
