Identification:

Habitat:
Coastal habitats including mudflats, sandy shores, tidal lagoons, and mangroves. Often found along sheltered coastlines and intertidal zones.

Common resident and breeding species. Widely observed along coastal areas, especially in mangroves and mudflats.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds primarily on crabs and other crustaceans, as well as mollusks and small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen in groups, especially along shorelines. Walks slowly while foraging, using its strong bill to break open crabs. Nests colonially in sandy islands, digging burrows for nesting—a unique behavior among waders. Flight is steady and direct.
