Identification:
A medium-sized, dark waterbird with an all-black body and a distinctive white frontal shield and bill. It has red eyes and lobed toes (not webbed), which help it swim efficiently. In flight, it appears heavy with rapid wingbeats and trailing legs. Juveniles are greyer with a paler face.

Habitat:
Freshwater lakes, ponds, reservoirs, marshes, and slow-moving rivers. Prefers open water with surrounding vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Common winter visitor and local breeder. Widely distributed in wetlands across the country.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on aquatic plants, algae, seeds, insects, and small aquatic animals.

Behavior:
Often seen swimming on open water or diving for food. Can be aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. Frequently forms large flocks in winter. Known for its jerky head movements while swimming and running take-off across the water surface.
