Identification:
The largest wader in its range, easily recognized by its very long, downcurved bill. Plumage is mottled brown with streaking that provides excellent camouflage in coastal and grassy habitats. It has long legs and a relatively long neck. In flight, it shows broad wings and a slow, steady wingbeat, with no strong wing bars. Its haunting, bubbling call is one of the most distinctive sounds of wetlands.

Habitat:
Coastal mudflats, estuaries, salt marshes, wet grasslands, and inland wetlands. Often found in open, undisturbed areas.

Status in the UAE:
Common winter visitor. Frequently recorded along coastlines, mudflats, and wetlands.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on worms, crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates, probing deep into soft mud with its long bill.

Behavior:
Often seen in small groups or loose flocks. Feeds methodically by probing into mud. Flight is strong but not fast, usually with steady wingbeats. Known for its loud, far-carrying call, especially in open landscapes.
