Identification:
One of the largest owls in the world, with a powerful build, broad wings, and prominent ear tufts. Plumage is mottled brown, black, and buff, providing excellent camouflage against rocky terrain. It has striking orange eyes, a large head, and a deep, commanding presence. In flight, it appears massive with slow, silent wingbeats.

Habitat:
Rocky mountains, cliffs, gorges, quarries, and open woodland. Strongly associated with rugged terrain that offers nesting ledges.

Status in Lebanon:
Resident but rare and highly localized. Found mainly in mountainous regions and remote rocky areas.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on a wide range of prey including mammals, birds, reptiles, and occasionally large insects.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and highly territorial. Hunts silently using powerful flight and sharp talons. Often perches on elevated vantage points. Its deep, booming call carries over long distances, especially at night. Nests on cliffs or rocky ledges.
