Identification:
A small diving duck with a rich chestnut-brown body. The male is distinctive with a deep reddish-brown coloration, a white undertail, and striking pale (whitish) eyes. The female is duller brown with darker eyes. Both sexes show a white belly, visible in flight, and lack the strong contrast seen in many other diving ducks.

Habitat:
Freshwater wetlands, marshes, lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers with abundant vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Uncommon winter visitor. Recorded in suitable wetland habitats.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on aquatic plants, seeds, algae, and small invertebrates.

Behavior:
A diving duck that feeds by submerging underwater. Often seen alone or in small groups rather than large flocks. Generally shy and prefers vegetated wetlands. Flight is fast and direct.
