Identification:
A medium-sized canid with a lean, dog-like build, pointed muzzle, and relatively short tail. The coat is typically golden-yellow to greyish with black-tipped hairs, giving a grizzled appearance. The color may vary seasonally and regionally. Ears are pointed and upright, and the tail is bushy but shorter than that of a fox.

Habitat:
Open landscapes, scrublands, agricultural areas, forest edges, and semi-arid regions. Often found near water sources and human settlements.

Status in Lebanon:
Native and locally common. Widespread across the country in suitable habitats, especially in lowland and semi-open areas.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fruits, and carrion. Highly opportunistic.

Behavior:
Mostly nocturnal or crepuscular. Often seen alone, in pairs, or small family groups. Highly adaptable and opportunistic feeder. Known for its distinctive howling calls, especially at night. Uses dens for shelter and raising young.
