Greater Sandplover / Charadrius leschenaultii **
The Greater Sandplover is a medium-sized shorebird that frequents coastal mudflats, sandy beaches, and tidal flats across the UAE during migration and winter. With its long legs, relatively large bill, and swift movements, it's well adapted to foraging in intertidal zones where it feeds on small invertebrates. Though often seen in mixed flocks with other waders, its distinct features and upright posture make it stand out. During breeding season, which occurs outside the UAE, it develops a rich rufous breast band and striking plumage, contrasting with its more subtle non-breeding look typically seen in the region. The presence of the Greater Sandplover in the UAE's coastal ecosystems highlights the importance of these habitats for migratory shorebirds traveling across continents.
