Al Qudra - DUBAI - United Arab Emirates

Herping around Al Qudra’s desert lakes and sand dunes is a rewarding mix of aquatic and arid habitats. In the cooler months (November–April), stroll the sandy shorelines at dawn to spot sand-skimming Sand Skinks (Scincus scincus) and sunbathing Sinai Agamas (Trapelus sinaitus), while the reed-lined edges may harbor calling Arabian Toads (Bufotes viridis). As evening falls—even in winter—the first glow of your headlamp can reveal Keyserling’s Wonder Geckos (Teratoscincus keyserlingii) clinging to rocky outcrops. In summer (June–September), venture out after 9 PM to find nocturnal hunters: the sleek Sandfish Skink burrowing beneath loose dunes, and under flat stones you might uncover Hajar Saw-scaled Vipers (Echis omanensis) or the occasional Arabian Horned Viper (Cerastes gasperettii). With its mosaic of freshwater ponds, gravel plains, and shifting sands, Al Qudra offers herpers a compact yet diverse field site—just bring sturdy boots, plenty of water, a bright headlamp, and always turn stones gently to respect the creatures you meet.
