Identification:
A small, stocky heron often overlooked due to its excellent camouflage. When at rest, it appears dull brown with streaked plumage blending perfectly into muddy or vegetated surroundings. In flight, it transforms dramatically, revealing bright white wings that contrast sharply with the body. It has a short neck, yellow bill with a dark tip, and yellowish legs.

Habitat:
Wetlands, ponds, marshes, canals, rice fields, and urban water bodies. Often found near still or slow-moving water.

Status in the UAE:
Rare visitor or escapee. Not a regular species in the wild.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on fish, amphibians, insects, and small aquatic animals.

Behavior:
A patient ambush hunter. Often stands motionless for long periods before striking suddenly at prey. Solitary and secretive, but may gather in small groups in feeding areas. Flies short distances when disturbed.
