Identification:
A medium-sized bird with a sturdy body and a strong bill. The head and breast are brownish to bluish, while the wings display brilliant shades of turquoise, deep blue, and electric blue, especially visible in flight. The tail is short with a blue tone. When perched, it appears relatively plain, but in flight it reveals striking, vivid colors.

Habitat:
Open countryside, farmland, desert edges, roadside areas, and open plains with scattered trees or structures.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident. Widely distributed across open habitats.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on large insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and occasionally small rodents.

Behavior:
Often seen perched on wires, poles, or exposed branches, scanning for prey. Hunts by dropping onto prey from a perch. Known for its acrobatic display flights during the breeding season. Usually solitary or in pairs.

Least Concern (IUCN Red List)
