Identification:
A large, fast-moving snake with a very slender and elongated body. Adults are usually uniform dark grey to black, especially on the head and upper body, while juveniles show a patterned appearance with lighter blotches on a grey or brown background. The head is narrow with large eyes and round pupils. Scales are smooth, giving the snake a glossy appearance.

Habitat:
Open landscapes including rocky hillsides, scrublands, forest edges, agricultural areas, and dry valleys. Often associated with warm, sun-exposed environments.

Status in Lebanon:
Native and relatively common. Widespread across suitable habitats from lowlands to mountainous regions.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on rodents, birds, lizards, and other small animals.

Behavior:
Diurnal and extremely fast. An active hunter that relies on speed and vision rather than ambush. Often seen moving quickly across open ground. Non-venomous but can be defensive when threatened, sometimes raising the front of its body and striking. Excellent climber.
