Identification:
A large, legless lizard often mistaken for a snake, but distinguishable by its rigid body, visible eyelids, and external ear openings. The body is elongated and cylindrical with a long tail that can break off when threatened. Coloration varies from brown to bronze or olive, sometimes with faint patterns or speckling. The head is blunt, and the movement appears less fluid than true snakes.

Habitat:
Open woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, agricultural areas, and forest edges. Prefers areas with ground cover such as vegetation, rocks, or loose soil.

Status in Lebanon:
Native and relatively common. Found in a wide range of habitats, especially in vegetated and semi-open areas.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, snails, slugs, small reptiles, and occasionally small mammals.

Behavior:
Diurnal and mostly ground-dwelling. Moves slowly compared to snakes but can be surprisingly fast over short distances. When threatened, may shed its tail to escape predators. Generally harmless and non-aggressive.
