Identification:
A small plover with a delicate build and relatively short legs. It is best identified by its bright yellow orbital ring around the eye, which stands out clearly at close range. In breeding plumage, it shows a black forehead band, a full black breast band, and a white collar separating the two. Upperparts are brown, while underparts are white. The bill is short and dark.

Habitat:
Freshwater habitats such as riverbanks, gravel bars, lake shores, and muddy edges. Also found in temporary pools and inland wetlands.

Status in the UAE:
Passage migrant and uncommon winter visitor. Recorded mainly in inland wetlands and open muddy areas.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on small insects, worms, and other invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen running quickly along the ground, stopping abruptly to pick prey. Typically solitary or in small groups. Its movements are quick and alert. Nests on open gravel or sandy ground, well camouflaged.
