Identification:
A very small and delicate tern with a compact body and short tail. In breeding plumage, it shows a black cap, white forehead, and a bright yellow bill with a dark tip. The upperparts are pale grey, and the underparts are white. In non-breeding plumage, the black cap is reduced and the forehead becomes more extensive. Its light, buoyant flight and small size are key identification features.

Habitat:
Coastal areas including sandy beaches, lagoons, estuaries, mudflats, and saltpans. Also breeds on open sandy or gravelly ground.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident and breeder, as well as a passage migrant. Widely distributed along coastal habitats.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on small fish, which it catches by plunge-diving.

Behavior:
Often seen hovering briefly before diving into the water to catch prey. Usually found singly, in pairs, or in small colonies during breeding. Nests on open ground with minimal cover, making it vulnerable to disturbance. Fast and agile in flight.
