Identification:
A large, elongated centipede with a segmented body and numerous pairs of legs. Coloration is typically yellowish to light brown with darker transverse bands across the segments, giving it a “banded” appearance. The head is darker, and the first pair of legs is modified into venomous claws (forcipules) used for capturing prey. The final pair of legs is longer and often held extended.

Habitat:
Rocky areas, dry forests, scrublands, gardens, and agricultural land. Often found under stones, logs, and within crevices or loose soil.

Status in Lebanon:
Native and common. Widespread across a variety of habitats, especially in warm and dry regions.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, occasionally small vertebrates.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and fast-moving. Hides during the day and becomes active at night. A skilled predator that uses its venom to immobilize prey. Can be defensive if disturbed and capable of delivering a painful bite, though not dangerous to healthy humans.
