Identification:
A striking amphibian with a glossy black body marked by irregular yellow to orange patches or spots. The pattern varies between individuals, making each salamander unique. It has a robust body, short limbs, and a broad head with prominent eyes. The skin is smooth but slightly granular and often appears moist.

Habitat:
Moist forested areas, mountainous regions, and shaded valleys. Closely associated with freshwater sources such as springs, streams, and forest pools.

Status in Lebanon:
Native but localized. Found mainly in northern and mountainous regions where suitable humid habitats exist.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, worms, slugs, and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and secretive. Remains hidden under stones, logs, or leaf litter during the day. Emerges at night or during wet conditions. Slow-moving but well protected by toxic skin secretions that deter predators.
