Identification:
A large, distinctive raptor specialized for fishing. It has long, narrow wings that appear slightly bent at the wrist in flight. The upperparts are dark brown, while the underparts are white. The head is white with a bold dark eye stripe extending from the eye to the back of the head. The bill is hooked, and the legs are pale with strong talons adapted for catching fish.

Habitat:
Coastal areas, lagoons, estuaries, lakes, and large rivers. Always closely associated with water.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident and breeder. Widely distributed along the coast, especially on islands and protected areas.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds almost exclusively on fish.

Behavior:
Often seen hovering over water before diving feet-first to catch fish. A powerful and precise hunter. Carries fish head-first in flight to reduce air resistance. Nests on cliffs, poles, or artificial structures near water. Strongly territorial during breeding.

Least Concern (IUCN Red List)
