Identification:
A large rodent with a unique, hare-like appearance. It has long, slender legs, a relatively small head, and large eyes. The body is covered in short, dense fur, typically grey-brown with lighter underparts and a distinct white patch near the rump. The ears are moderate in length, and the overall posture resembles a small deer or hare.

Habitat:
Native to the open grasslands and shrublands of Argentina. In the UAE, found only in controlled environments such as wildlife parks, zoos, and private reserves.

Status in the UAE:
Non-native. Present in captivity and also locally established in some open areas following releases or escapes, such as around Al Qudra. These populations are not part of the native ecosystem.

Diet:
Herbivorous — feeds on grasses, leaves, and other plant material.

Behavior:
Diurnal and social. Often seen in pairs or small groups. Known for forming long-term monogamous bonds. Moves with a distinctive bounding gait and is capable of fast running. In the wild, uses communal burrows for raising young.
