Identification:
A large desert owl with a powerful build and prominent ear tufts. Its plumage is sandy buff with darker streaking and mottling, providing excellent camouflage against rocky desert landscapes. The eyes are striking amber to orange, and the facial disc is relatively pale with subtle markings. Compared to the Eurasian Eagle-Owl, it appears smaller and more finely patterned.

Habitat:
Rocky deserts, cliffs, wadis, and mountainous regions. Prefers arid landscapes with ledges and caves for roosting and nesting.

Status in the UAE:
Resident but uncommon. Found in mountainous and rocky desert regions, particularly in the Hajar Mountains.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on rodents, birds, reptiles, and other small to medium-sized animals.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and highly elusive. Hunts silently using powerful wings and excellent night vision. Often perches on rocky outcrops while scanning for prey. During the day, roosts in shaded rock crevices or cliffs. Known for its deep, resonant calls that carry across desert valleys.
