Identification:
A large, slender heron with a long neck and legs. It appears darker and more richly colored than the Grey Heron. The plumage shows a mix of grey, chestnut, and deep purplish tones, especially on the neck and body. The neck is long and narrow with distinct dark streaks, and the bill is long and pointed. In flight, it often holds its neck in a tighter S-shape.

Habitat:
Dense wetlands, reed beds, marshes, and freshwater or brackish habitats with tall vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Resident breeder and passage migrant. Locally common in suitable wetland habitats, especially where reed beds are present.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and small vertebrates.

Behavior:
More secretive than other herons. Often stays hidden within reeds and dense vegetation. Hunts by stalking slowly or standing still before striking. Flight is steady and deliberate. Nests in colonies within reed beds.
