Identification:
A small, slender bird with a slightly curved bill adapted for nectar feeding. The male is striking in breeding plumage, appearing glossy dark with iridescent purple and blue tones in good light. Outside the breeding season, males resemble females, which are olive-brown above with yellowish underparts. The bill is long and curved, and the tail is short.

Habitat:
Gardens, parks, scrublands, plantations, and urban green areas. Often associated with flowering plants.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident. Widely distributed in urban and semi-natural habitats.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on nectar, insects, and small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Active and agile, often seen moving quickly between flowers. Capable of hovering briefly while feeding but usually perches. Males display prominently during breeding season. Builds hanging, pouch-like nests made of fibers and spider webs.
