Identification:
A small, ground-dwelling wheatear with a subtle but distinctive appearance. The plumage is sandy brown to greyish, blending well with arid landscapes. The tail is rich rufous, often contrasting with darker central feathers, and is frequently flicked, making it a key field mark. The face is relatively plain, and the bill is fine and pointed.

Habitat:
Rocky deserts, gravel plains, mountain slopes, and arid semi-desert landscapes.

Status in the UAE:
Winter visitor. Fairly common in suitable rocky and desert habitats.

Diet:
Insectivorous — feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen on the ground or perched on rocks. Moves quickly between stones while foraging. Frequently flicks its tail, revealing the rufous coloration. Usually solitary. Well adapted to harsh, open environments.
