Identification:
A striking, long-legged plover with bold black, white, and brown contrast. The head, neck, and upper breast are black, sharply contrasting with white cheeks and underparts. The back is brown. Its most distinctive feature is the bright red fleshy wattles in front of the eyes, along with a red bill tipped in black. The legs are long and yellow.

Habitat:
Open wetlands, riverbanks, agricultural fields, grasslands, and urban open areas near water.

Status in the UAE:
Common resident and breeder. Widely distributed in wetlands, farms, and urban landscapes.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, worms, and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Very vocal and alert. Known for its loud, repeated calls, especially when disturbed. Often seen walking or running on the ground. Strongly territorial and will actively defend its nest, sometimes performing distraction displays. Nests on open ground.
