Identification:
A compact, ground-dwelling partridge with excellent desert camouflage. The plumage is sandy-grey with fine barring, blending seamlessly with rocky and arid landscapes. Males show more distinct markings, including a chestnut patch on the flanks and a subtle facial pattern, while females are generally paler and less defined. The bill is short, and the legs are relatively long for walking on rough terrain.

Habitat:
Rocky deserts, dry wadis, gravel plains, and mountainous slopes with sparse vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Native and locally common. Widely distributed in mountainous and rocky desert regions, especially in the Hajar Mountains.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on seeds, shoots, and small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Usually seen in small groups. Highly alert and relies on camouflage and stillness to avoid detection. When disturbed, runs quickly before taking short, explosive flights. Often heard before seen. Moves across rocky slopes with ease.

Least Concern (IUCN Red List)
