Identification:
A medium-sized hedgehog with a rounded body covered in dense spines. The spines are brown with pale tips, while the face, chest, and underside are lighter, often whitish, giving the species its name. Compared to the European Hedgehog, it tends to have a more uniform appearance with less distinct facial markings. The ears are relatively small and rounded.

Habitat:
Woodlands, grasslands, agricultural areas, gardens, and forest edges. Prefers habitats with ground cover and access to shelter.

Status in Lebanon:
Native and common. Widespread across a variety of habitats, including rural and semi-urban areas.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds mainly on insects, worms, snails, and other invertebrates, as well as some plant material.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and solitary. Spends the day hidden under vegetation, in burrows, or in natural shelters. Forages at night, using its strong sense of smell. When threatened, curls into a tight ball, raising its spines for protection. Plays an important role in controlling insect populations.
