Wadi Al Helo - Sharjah

  • Sharjah, Sharjah United Arab Emirates (map)

Wadi Al Helo—literally “Sweet Valley”—sits tucked into the rugged Hajar Mountains of Sharjah, where steep, metamorphic-rock walls give way to narrow channels and scattered acacia groves. As a seasonal wadi, its pools and damp crevices after winter rains create perfect microhabitats for herping: you’ll often find Keyserling’s Wonder Gecko (Teratoscincus keyserlingii) clinging to sun-warmed boulders, Arabian Toads (Bufotes viridis) calling from temporary pools, and the occasional Hajar Saw-scaled Viper (Echis omanensis) lying in ambush under loose stones. In spring and early summer evenings, look for Sinai Agamas basking on exposed rock faces and Sand Skinks slipping through sandy patches. With its blend of rocky outcrops, seasonal watercourses, and desert shrubs, Wadi Al Helo offers herpetologists a compact yet diverse field site—just be sure to move stones gently, stay aware of venomous species, and carry plenty of water and headlamp.
