Identification:
A slender and elegant tern recognized by its distinctive white cheeks contrasting with a black cap during the breeding season. The upperparts are pale grey, while the underparts are slightly darker grey than many other terns. The bill is dark and slender, and the legs range from reddish to dark reddish-black. In flight, it appears graceful with narrow pointed wings and swift agile movements.

Habitat:
Coastal waters, offshore islands, lagoons, coral reefs, sandy islets, and shallow marine environments.

Status in the UAE:
Local summer breeder and passage migrant. Breeds on offshore islands and coastal habitats across the UAE.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on small fish and marine invertebrates.

Behavior:
Frequently seen flying low above the sea searching for prey before plunge-diving into the water. Often forms colonies during breeding season on sandy islands. Agile and highly adapted to marine life. Usually seen in groups along coastal waters.
