Identification:
A striking and unmistakable kingfisher with rich chestnut-brown plumage, brilliant turquoise-blue wings and back, and a bright white throat and breast patch. The bill is large, heavy, and vivid red, while the legs are also reddish. In flight, the electric-blue wing panels are especially prominent.

Habitat:
Wetlands, mangroves, agricultural fields, gardens, urban parks, desert farms, and open country near water or suitable hunting grounds.

Status in the Lebanon:
Common resident and breeder in suitable habitats across the country.

Status in UAE:
Rare visitor and passage migrant.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on fish, insects, crabs, reptiles, amphibians, and small vertebrates.

Behavior:
Usually seen perched prominently on wires, branches, or poles while scanning for prey. Hunts by diving or dropping rapidly onto prey from a perch. Highly vocal with loud repetitive calls. Unlike many kingfishers, it is not strictly dependent on aquatic habitats and often hunts far from water.
