The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a graceful and easily recognizable bird of prey seen in Lebanon mainly during migration, as the country lies on one of the eastern Mediterranean’s major flyways for soaring birds. It is identified by its dark brown plumage, long wings, and distinctly forked tail, often seen circling high on rising thermals with steady, effortless movement. In Lebanon, the Black Kite can become a noticeable part of the migration season, and monitoring work has shown it to be one of the prominent raptors passing through the country, sometimes in impressive numbers. An adaptable hunter and scavenger, it feeds on small vertebrates, carrion, and other easy food sources, and its seasonal passage highlights Lebanon’s importance as a corridor for migratory raptors moving between Eurasia and their wintering grounds farther south.
