The Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) is a striking and elusive wetland bird known for its glossy black plumage with iridescent green and purple hues, contrasting with a pure white belly. Unlike the more sociable White Stork, the Black Stork is shy and secretive, favoring quiet freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, and forested wetlands. It is a migratory species in Lebanon, passing through during spring and autumn. Though rare, it can occasionally be spotted in remote valleys and wetlands during migration. Its presence is a special moment for birdwatchers and photographers due to its rarity and graceful flight. The species feeds mainly on fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates, and it nests in tall trees or on cliff ledges in undisturbed areas.
