Identification:
A large, robust tarantula with a dark brown to deep black coloration. The body is covered with fine hairs, giving it a velvety appearance. Legs are thick and strong, adapted for digging and movement over rough terrain. Compared to other tarantulas, it has a relatively uniform dark coloration without strong patterning.

Habitat:
Dry and rocky environments, including hillsides, scrublands, and semi-arid regions. It lives in burrows that it digs into soil or beneath rocks, providing shelter from heat and predators.

Status in the Region:
Native to the eastern Mediterranean, including parts of the Middle East. Locally present but rarely seen due to its nocturnal and secretive behavior.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects and other small invertebrates. Hunts at night, relying on vibration and touch rather than vision.

Behavior:
Primarily nocturnal and solitary. Spends most of the day hidden in its burrow and emerges at night to hunt. Generally non-aggressive, but may defend itself using urticating hairs or by biting if threatened.
