The Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus) is a slender, elegant eagle recorded in Lebanon mainly as a migratory passage bird, moving through the country along one of the most important flyways in the African–Eurasian system. Lebanon’s national bird checklist includes the species, and recent conservation material from the region highlights the Booted Eagle among the raptors regularly observed during migration over Lebanese bottleneck sites such as Mount Terbol. Smaller and more lightly built than many other eagles, it shows broad yet relatively narrow wings, a compact eagle-shaped head, and a pale underwing panel that can stand out clearly in flight, with both light and dark morphs adding variety to its appearance. As it passes over Lebanon, it is often seen soaring on thermals above mountain slopes, wooded ridges, and open landscapes, scanning below for small birds, reptiles, and mammals. Its seasonal movement through the country reflects Lebanon’s wider importance for migrating raptors, with older flyway assessments even suggesting that a substantial share of the Booted Eagle population uses this corridor during spring and autumn passage.
