The Eurasian Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is a powerful and elusive bird of prey that appears in Lebanon mainly as a scarce migratory or passage visitor, especially during seasonal movements across the region. Larger and more robust than other accipiters, it has broad wings, a long tail, and a fierce, confident look, with adults showing a grey upper body, finely barred underparts, and a striking pale eyebrow. In Lebanon, it may be observed passing through wooded hills, mountain slopes, and forested areas where it can hunt birds and small mammals with speed and precision. Known for its agility and strength, the Eurasian Goshawk is a formidable aerial hunter, often flying low and fast through trees in pursuit of prey. Although not commonly encountered, its presence during migration adds to the richness of Lebanon’s raptor diversity and highlights the country’s importance as a corridor for migrating birds.
