Identification:
A striking black-and-white wader with a bold appearance. It has a glossy black head, neck, and upperparts, contrasting with white underparts. The long, straight, bright orange-red bill is thick and powerful, adapted for opening shellfish. Legs are pinkish, and the eyes are red with a distinct orange eye-ring. In flight, it shows a broad white wing stripe.

Habitat:
Coastal areas including rocky shores, sandy beaches, mudflats, and estuaries. Occasionally found inland near lakes or rivers.

Status in the UAE:
Uncommon winter visitor. Seen along coastlines, especially in suitable feeding areas.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on mollusks such as oysters and mussels, as well as worms and other invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen in pairs or small groups. Uses its strong bill to pry open shells or hammer them apart. Territorial during breeding in its main range. Its loud, sharp calls are a common feature along coasts where it occurs.
