Identification:
A medium-sized, long-legged bird with a cryptic sandy-brown plumage that blends perfectly with dry ground. It has strikingly large yellow eyes, a strong slightly upturned bill with a black tip, and thick “knee” joints that give the species its name. In flight, it shows bold black-and-white wing patterns.

Habitat:
Dry open habitats such as semi-deserts, gravel plains, steppe, and agricultural fields. Prefers flat, sparsely vegetated ground.

Status in the UAE:
Resident and winter visitor. Locally common in suitable desert and open habitats.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds on insects, small mammals, reptiles, and other invertebrates.

Behavior:
Mostly nocturnal and crepuscular. During the day, it remains motionless and well camouflaged. At night, it becomes active, foraging on the ground. Known for its haunting, loud calls often heard after sunset. Nests directly on the ground, relying on camouflage for protection.

Least Concern (IUCN Red List), though declining in parts of its range
