Orlov’s Fan-footed Gecko
Orlov’s Fan-footed Gecko is one of the larger and more impressive geckos found in the rocky mountains of the UAE. It has a slender body, long legs, a strong head, large eyes, and wide fan-like toes that help it grip rock surfaces. Its body is usually brownish-grey with darker markings, allowing it to blend well with cliffs, boulders, and wadi walls. Compared with many smaller geckos, this species looks more powerful and agile, especially when seen moving across vertical rock at night.
Habitat and behavior
In the UAE, this species is closely associated with rocky mountain habitats, especially cliffs, boulders, wadis, and steep rock faces in the Hajar Mountains. It is a rock-dwelling gecko that moves confidently on vertical surfaces, using its expanded toes to climb and hunt. At night, it can be seen waiting on rocks or moving across cliff faces in search of moths and other insects. Its habitat is very different from open desert geckos, making it one of the key species to represent the mountain side of UAE gecko diversity.
Why this species matters
Orlov’s Fan-footed Gecko is important because it shows how much hidden reptile diversity exists within the Hajar Mountains. Research on Ptyodactylus geckos revealed cryptic diversity in the region, separating northern Hajar populations from those across the rest of the mountain range, which are assigned to Ptyodactylus orlovi. For a UAE gecko portfolio, this species is a strong mountain representative: large, active, highly adapted to rock, and part of a complex group of geckos shaped by the geography of the Hajar Mountains.
