Identification:
A large, elegant grebe with a long neck and a slender, pointed bill. In breeding plumage, it is unmistakable, showing a striking black double crest and chestnut-and-black facial ruff. Outside the breeding season, it appears more subdued, with a grey-brown back, white underparts, and a pale face. It sits low in the water and rarely shows its body fully.

Habitat:
Freshwater lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and slow-moving rivers with open water and some vegetation.

Status in the UAE:
Uncommon winter visitor. Recorded in larger wetlands and reservoirs.

Diet:
Carnivorous — feeds mainly on fish, as well as aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small amphibians.

Behavior:
An excellent diver, often disappearing underwater for extended periods while hunting. Known for its elaborate courtship displays, including synchronized movements and “weed dances.” Usually seen in pairs or small groups. Flight requires a running start across the water.
