The Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a large, elegant waterbird known for its ornate head plumes and elaborate courtship displays. In Lebanon, it is mostly seen during the winter months in freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and large wetlands. This grebe is an excellent diver, feeding primarily on fish and aquatic invertebrates. During the breeding season (mainly outside Lebanon), the species is famous for its synchronized mating dance, where pairs mirror each other’s movements on the water. Its slender neck, sharp bill, and striking plumage make it unmistakable. Though not a breeder in Lebanon, it remains a remarkable sight for birdwatchers during migration and winter.
