Identification:
A tall, elegant crane with a striking golden crown of stiff feathers on its head. The body is mainly grey, with white wings accented by chestnut and golden tones. It has a distinctive white cheek patch with a red throat wattle. Long black legs and a graceful posture complete its appearance. Both sexes are similar.

Habitat:
Wetlands, grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas near water. Often found in open landscapes with access to shallow water.

Status in the UAE:
Not native. Occasionally seen in captivity or collections; any wild sightings are likely escapees.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on seeds, grasses, insects, small vertebrates, and aquatic organisms.

Behavior:
Often seen in pairs or small groups. Known for elaborate courtship dances involving jumping, wing spreading, and vocalizations. Unlike most cranes, it can perch in trees thanks to its long hind toe.
