The Hume's Wheatear (Oenanthe albonigra) is a striking passerine bird found in arid, rocky landscapes across the Middle East and South Asia. It is characterized by its black plumage, contrasting white rump, and a distinctive white patch on the wings, which is especially visible in flight. Preferring dry, rugged terrains such as cliffs, wadis, and rocky outcrops, this territorial species often perches on prominent rocks while scanning for insects, its primary food source. Unlike some migratory wheatears, Hume’s Wheatear is largely a resident species, although some populations may show seasonal movements. Its sharp, melodious calls and upright posture make it easy to spot despite its dark coloration. In the UAE, it is commonly found in mountainous and semi-desert areas, blending seamlessly with its harsh yet beautiful surroundings.
