Identification:
A small hedgehog distinguished by its unusually large ears, which are longer and more prominent than those of other hedgehog species. The spines are relatively short and pale, often sandy or light brown, while the face and underside are lighter. The body appears more lightly built compared to the European Hedgehog. The long ears play a key role in heat regulation in warmer environments.

Habitat:
Arid and semi-arid environments, open plains, steppe, and rocky areas with sparse vegetation. Often found in dry landscapes.

Status in Lebanon:
Recently confirmed (first record 2025-March-04) and likely rare. Recorded in the northern Bekaa region, particularly around Hermel, suggesting a presence in Lebanon’s drier eastern landscapes.

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds mainly on insects, as well as other invertebrates, small vertebrates, and occasionally plant material.

Behavior:
Nocturnal and solitary. Spends the day hidden in burrows or under cover and emerges at night to forage. Known for its ability to withstand harsh conditions and conserve water. When threatened, it curls into a defensive ball, using its spines for protection.
