Identification:
A striking wheatear with strong black-and-white contrast in the male during breeding season. The male shows a black face, throat, and upperparts with white underparts and a white crown or forehead depending on subspecies and season. The tail displays the typical black “T” pattern of wheatears. Females are much duller, brownish with less contrast, but still show the characteristic tail pattern.

Habitat:
Rocky deserts, gravel plains, open dry landscapes, and semi-arid habitats.

Status in the UAE:
Passage migrant and winter visitor. Fairly common in suitable open habitats during migration.

Diet:
Insectivorous — feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates.

Behavior:
Often seen perched on rocks or low shrubs, scanning for prey. Hunts by making short flights to the ground or air to catch insects. Frequently flicks its tail. Usually solitary or in small numbers during migration.
